West Mt. Airy, PA
After a successful front yard redesign, this long-standing West Mt. Airy couple hired Flower Powered to envision a new side and back yard space that could be utilized by the family and their two rescue dogs. As a new cedar fence was being installed, Flower Powered got to work with a functional plan that addressed some of the unique challenges of the topography while adding more beauty to the inherent landscape.
Some of the main items on the homeowners' wish list were the following.
- Maintain some of the existing shrubs and perennials.
- Create a space for entertainment and lounging.
- Make it dog friendly.
- Ensure any re-grading channels rain water away from house.
After listening to their ideas, our landscape designer presented a plan centered around a low floating Cedar Deck. A path around the deck encourage dogs to run and play, while the yard's perimeter was used to add new beautiful plantings. Grading the path also enabled a new route for water to flow away from the home.
One corner of the yard, viewable from the deck, was designated as the focal point and included a wide variety of colorful trees, shrubs and perennials. Hardy plants, including Hydrangeas, Hostas and a flowering crab apple tree were chosen to work in part shade, part sun conditions. Low rock walls were built from existing stones to border the garden areas and discourage any canine destruction. We also utilized a planting space, on top of a stone wall, to add more delicate plant species.
"We love the new back yard and so do the dogs. The deck was the right choice and we use it often to take in the beautiful new scenery.
Flower Powered, based in Philadelphia, also built a rock step from native Wissahickon Schist. The steps connected the side yard walkway with the new back yard landscaping. Final touches, including Adirondack chairs, a side table and custom planters brought the design to life. Now the homeowners can be seen having their morning coffee, watching the dogs play and taking in the new beautiful surroundings. They even remarked that the dogs follow the new path and even use the new steps.
